Gerakaris Family Wines

Gerakaris Family Wines

Gerakaris Family Wines was founded in 2010 by Kath Gerakaris. Our boutique winery in the heart of Craighall Park, Johannesburg, produces wine from grapes sourced from farms in the Swartland and Elgin, Western Cape. Five wines are made by Kath, two Chenin blancs and three Syrahs.

Wine Tasting

We offer wine tastings of our 5 wines in our gardens, or inside the winery in case of rain. Wine tastings are R120 person. We also offer a cheese board designed to match the wines, show casing four South African cheese producers, bowls of olives from the Western Cape, and Wagyu beef biltong from the Eastern Cape when available. Our garden is small and we like it this way because we can chat to everyone about what we do… however weekends do get busy so please make a booking ahead of time.

Wine Maker

Quickly tiring of the corporate world in Auckland, New Zealand, Kath enrolled at the University of Lincoln and completed a year long Post Graduate Diploma in Viticulture and Oenology. With her freshly minted qualification in hand she left New Zealand and planned to globetrot once more and learn all there was to know about winemaking in all the great producing countries.

First stop, South Africa. She never left!

Kath has worked in several top South African cellars including Thelema and Flagstone. In 2008 she moved to Johannesburg and launched Gerakaris Family Wines, a marketing company focused on bringing boutique Cape wineries to the Johannesburg market.

The business has developed into a holistic wine enterprise focussing on winemaking in Jozi. Bunches of grapes arrive fresh to be pressed, fermented, aged and bottled right here on the premises in Craighall Park.
